How This Calculator Works
Figuring out your real take-home pay isn't as simple as subtracting a flat percentage from your salary.
The US uses what's called a progressive tax system — meaning you don't pay one flat rate on your entire income.
Instead, your earnings are split into brackets, and each portion is taxed at a different rate.
So if you're in the 22% bracket, that doesn't mean 22% of your whole paycheck disappears — only the portion that falls within that bracket does.
Before any of that math happens, though, everyone gets a standard deduction.
For 2026, that's $16,100 if you're filing single, or $32,200 if you're married and filing jointly.
This amount comes off your gross income first, and only what's left gets taxed.
On top of federal income tax, you'll also see two more deductions on every paycheck: Social Security and Medicare, together known as FICA.
Social Security takes 6.2% of your income, though only up to a certain cap each year. Medicare takes 1.45%, and if you're a higher earner, an extra 0.9% kicks in above certain thresholds.Heading: What This Calculator Doesn't IncludeThis tool estimates your federal tax and FICA deductions accurately, but it doesn't factor in state or local income tax — and those vary a lot depending on where you live.
Some states, like Texas or Florida, don't charge income tax at all. Others, like California or New York, take a meaningful chunk.
If you want a fully accurate number for your specific state, you'll need to add that separately.
